The Kikuchi river flows through northern Kumamoto. A river classified as ‘top tier’ for its importance to Japan. The mineral rich water that irrigates the Kikuchi basin, springing from the foothills of Mt Aso, encouraged a rice farming culture in the area. Even now, the region is renowned for its high quality rice and produces award-winning brands. The area was once also a thriving centre for trade, and traces from this era of prosperity can still be found today. In Takana, the Takaseura river still retains some features of its Edo period port town. In Yamaga you can travel back in time with a walk through the old cityscape to the Yachiyoza theatre, a relic of Meiji era popular entertainment. The Kikuchi river basin is also renowned for its hot springs, boasting some of Kyushu’s top onsens, such as the Yamaga onsen, Hirayama onsen and Tamana onsen.
