Historic hot spring finally reopened after destruction by earthquake
Located at the foot of Mount Aso, Jigoku Onsen (meaning “hot spring in hell” in Japanese) is a hot spring with around 200 years of history and has been handed down for seven generations. Known as an ancient and high class spa good for curing sickness, Jigoku Onsen is treasured and loved by many – in the Edo period, there was even a rule allowing only clan samurais to bathe there. The venue was destroyed by the Kumamoto earthquake in 2016 and was forced to close for almost 3 years, but was partly reopened in April 2019. In September 2019 it opened its facility for overnight visitors as well.
