Yachiyoza Theater

Theater with its origin going back to the Edo period

This two-story wooden theater was built in 1910 with financial support from the shop owners of Yamaga, who had made a fortune from hot springs and business. The theater is equipped with many features, including the mawari-butai (revolving stage) supported by German rails, which were rare at that time, the masuseki (box seats), and the hanamichi (elevated walkway extending from the stage to the rear of the theater). As it retains the original style of a kabuki theater from the Edo period, the theater was designated as an important cultural asset of Japan in 1998. With the completion of the restoration work that started in 1996 ("Great Repair of Heisei"), the theater was put in the present form in May 2001. The ceiling paintings and the chandeliers have been restored based on available documentation of the original theater. The paintings depict old advertisements of nostalgic design in bright colors and serve as a symbol of the theater. To this day, famous actors and artists perform in this theater.
