Komekome somon tour

Walking tour on the theme of rice

The Somon area of Yamaga, where the Buzen road meets the Kikuchi river, retains atmosphere of old days in its streets. The Kikuchi basin has been a major rice production area in Kumamoto from old days and once prospered as a rice trade center. To keep history alive, the local shopkeepers have decided organize a walking tour of the town on the theme of rice. Starting from a 185 year-old koji (yeast) shop, the tour takes you to sake brewery found in 1896, a rice cracker shop, a temple and other places of interest in the area. During the tour, participants taste amazake (sweet drink made from fermented rice) and sake and try making senbei rice crackers. There is a souvenir after the tour. The tour is popular among adults as well as children because of the casual and relaxed nature of the tour. Both groups and individual tourists are welcome. The tour lasts about 60 minutes and costs 600 yen. Reservation is required. Contact Yamaga Onsen Kanko Kyokai (the Yamaga Hot Spring Tourism Association) for reservation by 17:00 of the previous day.
